- American Eagle Outfitters (AE): From a Family-owned Store to a Teenage National Brand
AE was founded in 1977 in Michigan by the Silverman family. It was originally a casual line of the men's clothing store, focusing on outdoor casual wear for young people. The first store was located in a shopping center, selling jeans, sweatshirts, and outdoor jackets. It quickly became a gathering place for American teenagers.
In 1990, it was acquired by the Schottenstein family, which fully privatized it and launched its own exclusive brand, no longer selling third-party products. In 1994, it went public on the Nasdaq, and in 1997, it focused on jeans and launched a multi-size fit system with the slogan "Everyone has the right pair of jeans", quickly becoming a hit. After 2000, its annual sales exceeded 1 billion US dollars, becoming the top brand of jeans for American teenagers.
Curiosity: In the early 2000s, it sponsored the popular teen drama "Dawson's Creek", with all the main characters wearing AE, which led to a trend among American teenagers, resulting in a significant increase in sales. In 2006, it launched a secondary line called Aerie, focusing on underwear and swimwear, refusing to retouch photos and using models of average body types, advocating "positive body image", and becoming one of the most beloved underwear brands among the Z generation, with annual revenue exceeding 1 billion US dollars. Today, AE has over 1,000 stores worldwide and remains a representative of affordable, good-looking, and inclusive brands in the hearts of American young people.
